Laghouto(Long-necked Lute)
The lute is known throughtout Greece as the laouto, laghouto all of which names are derived from the Arabic
ud, for wood. The lute in Greece has a large, pear-shaped sound-box, a long, fretted neck, bent, broken,
backwards at its uppermost en, lateral pegs, and four double strings, attached to the bridge on the soundboard.
The instrument is played with a plectrum(penna).
In the late nineteenth century, the lute was made in three sizes, or heights. In our own time, it is the
intermediate size which has become the most popular. |
