Mec Yek (Balkan Gypsy)
Mec Yek is a band of musicians from Brussels and Ghent, that draw on European and Balkan music, particularly gypsy material.
Mec Yek is fronted by two Romani singers, Katia and Mielka Pohlodkova. with Jaune Toujoursó leader Piet Maris on accordion and vocals, plus Mathieu Verkaeren on double bass, Mattias Laga on sax soprano, clarinet and bassclarinet and Theophane Raballand, percussion (all members of Jaune Toujours and/or Arabanda).
The 'gipsy-link' was made in 1994, when singer/accordion player Piet Maris accompanied Laci Polhos, a Slovakian gipsy singer, during a small tour in Brussels. A year later Piet took his accordion to visit Laci in his home in Slovakia. This was the first of many visits.
In this gipsy colony of Rakusy, near the Polish border, at the heel of the high Tatra mountains, Piet made notes and recorded local gipsy songs, under the enthusiastic supervision of the villagers. This fieldwork resulted in the project Rakusatar!, which toured modestly in '96 and '97. out of these tours the band Mec Yek was born.
